Report of the AACRAO Professional Competencies and Proficiencies Working Group

Interest on the part of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) Board of Directors in the development of a set of descriptions of the core competencies for AACRAO professions goes back several years, with more active discussion beginning in 2011 under the leadership of AACRAO President Nora McLaughlin. At the December 2012 Leadership meeting, a discussion of core competencies was held with the AACRAO Board, Annual Meeting Program Committee members, AACRAO Professional Activities Committee chairs, and State and Regional Association leaders. Following further discussion and a review of examples of competencies developed by several other associations and organizations, a core competencies template was developed and first drafts of descriptions were created for an initial set of core competencies, which were presented at the December 2013 Leadership Meeting. Based on the suggestions coming out of that presentation, additional core competencies and lists of profession-specific core proficiencies were developed. These were presented to the chairs of the Professional Activities Committees at the 2014 AACRAO Annual Meeting. In March 2014, the AACRAO Board approved the creation of a working group, chaired by Jeff von Munkwitz-Smith, and charged it to: (1) Determine the final core competencies for the professional areas of enrollment management, registrar, and admission based on information from the AACRAO Board of Directors Strategic Planning Committee; (2) Define and complete the final version of the core competencies into the predefined template format; (3) Determine the final core proficiencies for the professional areas of enrollment management, registrar, and admission based on the given information from the Board of Directors Strategic Planning Committee; and (4) Determine the implementation of the core competencies and the core proficiencies for the use of the Association. This report provides descriptions of the following core competencies and proficiencies: (1) core professional competencies; (2) admissions core proficiencies; (3) enrollment management core proficiencies; and (4) registrar core proficiencies.
