A Resource Manual for Community College Faculty to Support Students with Learning Disabilities

According to the 23rd Annual Report to Congress, U.S. Department of Education, one out of every five people in the United States has a learning disability (LD). The dropout rate among these students is high, and students with learning disabilities are also less likely to attend 4-year colleges and universities. Although a majority of students with learning disabilities attend community college, community colleges' department of disability staff might not reach to all students with LD if these students do not voluntary access the services themselves. With a supportive system in place in the community college setting, however, more students with LD would have a better change of obtaining a higher education. The first step in this plan is to provide training to community college faculty members that will familiarize them with accommodations used to support students with LD in their classes. The purpose of this dissertation was to introduce and design a curriculum and resource manual that will support community college faculty members in understanding learning disabilities. By attending a full-day, in-service training, faculty members will also learn how they can support students with learning disabilities. At the end of the training, faculty members will receive a manual that includes a reference resource consisting of strategies and tools. Ideally, faculty members will also receive professional development credit. In the workshop session, faculty will learn about the history, definition, laws and accommodations for LD through a PowerPoint presented by an experienced LD presenter. Five full-time LD specialists from San Francisco Bay Area community colleges reviewed the manual and the PowerPoint presentation. The feedback from the LD specialists was positive and noted that the material was useful for faculty to support students with LD.
