An Exploratory Study: Creating a System to Effectively Identify Post Baccalaureate Teacher Candidates Who Require Dispositions Development

This executive position paper proposes recommendations for changes to the teacher candidate readiness evaluation policy and practice in the Education Department at Cabrini College. These recommendations are based upon best practices and evolving research on the importance of disposition characteristics for professional educators. A summarization of current practice is provided along with proposed procedures for identification and support for dispositions development. Admissions files for the graduate program provide relevant data regarding potential teacher candidates' dispositions criteria in order to successfully and effectively progress toward teacher certification. Faculty members who teach the first graduate course within the curriculum model for teacher candidacy rate each student for readiness in the profession. Qualitative assessment may also provide a valuable lens into candidate dispositions. All of the recommendations have the end goal of identifying and supporting teacher candidate disposition development. Each recommended component addresses a current need or an area with some deficiency within Cabrini's current program.
