The President's Cabinet and Leadership at a Midwestern Liberal Arts College: A Portrait of Change

Impetus to study how leaders of academic institutions navigate change is a contemporary challenge and opportunity. Understanding a case study of one institution's experience of change strategies through two significant events offers the opportunity to understand leadership and change in light of theoretical perspectives about change in higher education. Beginning with a framework of six factors for creating institutional change, the methodology of portraiture was employed to uncover three additional factors. The nine factors may be instructive both to practitioners seeking to lead an academic institution through change and also may be useful to researchers seeking to conceptualize further theoretical perspectives. Utilizing interview data and analysis along with portraying emergent themes at a single institution provide the context for in-depth understanding of leadership and change strategies. The researcher proposes several recommendations for the application of the methodology of portraiture for studying leadership and change in higher education, presents state-of-the-art ideas about potential utilization of NVivo software, and rearticulates a theoretical framework for creating institutional change.
