Implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports in Louisiana
Hill, Juanita Mathis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Louisiana University
Many teachers have expressed their concern about continuous classroom disruption. Time taken to correct undesired behaviors is reducing the number of instructional minutes in the classroom on a daily basis. Instead of relying solely on classroom rules, the teacher who wishes to implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports should use and implement school-wide rules. Implementing a successful Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports program takes time and effort on behalf of the district leadership team, school-wide leadership team, and entire faculty and staff. All personnel must be trained in Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports as a prerequisite for successful implementation. There are several phases to implementing the program. Despite the substantial research on Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, educators still find it difficult to get onboard with implementation. Not all educators believe that students should be rewarded as often as Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports suggests. However, those who are implementing the program are reaping the benefits of the healthy culture and climate that has been established. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between attitudes of elementary school site administrators toward Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and administrators' involvement in the implementation process of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports in a Southeast Louisiana School District.
