As part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading, students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of words as used in literary and informational texts. This focus on students' understanding of word meaning highlights the importance of vocabulary in reading comprehension. This report provides an overview of findings in the following areas: (1) National Score Trends; (2) Examples of Students' Vocabulary Knowledge; (3) Score Gains for Racial/Ethnic Groups; and (4) Score Gap by Gender.
