Comparing Interactions in Literature Circles in Both Online and in Class Discussions
Skeen, Christel Ghrist
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Sam Houston State University
Discourse analysis of literature circles can lead educators to understand the different types of interactions taking place as students talk about text. Social and academic interactions exist in both face-to-face and online discussions of reading material. This study examines two different settings of literature circles and compares interactions of student readers. Interactions in both settings proved more academic in nature than social and almost all social interactions were used to manage the social setting and to increase social acceptance. Discourse analysis was done to determine and code each interaction as academic or social in nature. Student motivation was also examined, and there was equal motivation for both online and face-to-face setting present for students, although students did have a preference. It is hoped that my research results in an understanding of the social and academic interactions children use to help aid them with reading comprehension. Additionally, the type of interactions students have in literature circles may help teachers feel more comfortable encouraging students in their classes to participate in both online and in class literature discussions as part of their learning.
