Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists' Atittudes toward and Perceptions of Teamwork in the Operating Room

Student registered nurse anesthetists are an important part of an operating room team, yet little research has investigated how they perceive teamwork or approach team related issues specific to the operating room. This mixed methods study evaluated junior and senior student registered nurse anesthetists' attitudes toward and perceptions of teamwork in the operating room. The conceptual framework assessed how prior teamwork and leadership experience, current training, and the use of teamwork skills in the operating room affected their attitudes and perceptions. The methodology consisted of a sequential explanatory design that began with the administration of both an attitude and perception survey administered before and after a team training course and again four months later. Group interviews were then conducted to investigate the survey results. Analyses of the quantitative and qualitative data identified that student registered nurse anesthetists (a) believed teamwork to be important and displayed positive attitudes toward and perceptions of teamwork in the operating room, (b) identified appropriate times for and types of teamwork training for both juniors and seniors, and (c) recognized the most important aspects of teamwork. The results of this study provide anesthesia educators with a better understanding of how to implement teamwork-training concepts into anesthesia curricula, the concepts that student registered nurse anesthetist felt were most important, and the benefits of including other operating room disciplines in teamwork training. The results also inform anesthesia clinicians, administrators, and policy makers of the need to provide teamwork training to existing OR teams. Teamwork between student registered nurse anesthetists and operating room team members has the potential to improve with continued practice leading to improved relationships among team members, and most importantly, better patient care.
