The Impact of Two Response-to-Intervention Tier 2 Literacy Programs on Middle Level Achievement
Bonnville, Joann K.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of two Response to Intervention (RTI) Tier 2 literacy programs used with sixth graders in a middle school setting to determine if the use of either the SuccessMaker® or READ 180® Tier 2 RTI literacy program for two marking periods, or eighteen weeks, positively impacted student achievement as measured by student scores on the Language Arts Literacy portion of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK). Sixty-eight students were identified as struggling readers using the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). These students were matched with sixty-eight struggling sixth-grade readers from the previous school year in order to have a comparison group. The comparison group did not participate in either of the Tier 2 interventions but did experience the core Tier 1 Making Meaning® curriculum utilized by the study school. Results indicated that neither the use of the SuccessMaker® nor READ 180® intervention program made a significant impact on NJASK6 scores. However, students in the READ 180® intervention showed significantly higher SRI Lexile® scores than their comparison group counterparts.
