The Relationship of Perceived Organizational Support, Job Satisfaction, and Years of Online Teaching Experience to Work Engagement among Online Undergraduate Adjunct Faculty Members

The rapid growth of online higher education has necessitated increased employment of adjunct faculty. Correlational analyses were implemented to determine whether a relationship exists between adjunct undergraduate faculty's perceptions of organizational support, overall job satisfaction, and online teaching experience, and their work engagement. Survey participants (N = 183) included adjunct faculty from one higher education institution offering multiple, fully online, undergraduate degree programs. Three established instruments, Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, Job in General questionnaire, and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, were self-administered using a web-based survey platform. Correlational and regression analyses were conducted to facilitate examination of the interrelationship of work engagement and perceived support, satisfaction, and experience. Strong evidence revealed perceptions of high-level support yielded increased job satisfaction and engagement. When controlling for level of job satisfaction, faculty with more experience were more engaged than faculty with less experience. Data trends highlighted the importance of providing support to online adjunct faculty to promote work engagement. Recommendations for research included determining the nature of organizational support valued by adjunct faculty and the effectiveness of specific support efforts.
