A Program Guide for Counseling and Psychological Services in Catholic Schools: A Solution-Focused Approach
Gonzalez, Andrea Kelly
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Our Lady of the Lake University
Historically, the Catholic school system has not regarded counseling services or comprehensive counseling programs as a required element in education. Only in recent years have most dioceses decreed that Catholic schools must implement a developmental counseling and guidance program. The focus of most research studies and the advancement of the school counseling profession have been in the realm of the public school system. Although some tenets of public school counseling can be implemented in a Catholic school setting, many are not an appropriate fit for the Catholic school counselor. Problems continue to exist regarding the role, responsibilities, expectations, and supervision of the Catholic school counselor. Also, the training and theoretical orientation of the counselor are not addressed in the Catholic school system, where philosophy and approach play a significant role in effectiveness of delivery and overall success of the program. To address this issue, a counseling program guide was constructed to aid counselors in a Catholic school setting whose position demands expertise and efficiency in the delivery of professional counseling and psychological services (or referral thereof), knowledge and comfort in working within a unique system, and the ability to employ a solution-focused theoretical approach to establish a best fit with the spiritual environment of the school, its philosophy and mission. The program guide was constructed based on a qualitative analysis of relevant literature, and the interview responses of catholic school counselors, principals, students, teachers and parents.
