An Examination of Institutional Advancement Vice Presidents' Reports at Four-Year Public and Private Historically Black Colleges and Universities Regarding Their Use of the Five Minds to Promote Stewardship

The purpose of this qualitative, collective case study was to examine institutional advancement vice presidents' reports at four-year public and private historically Black colleges and universities regarding their use of the five minds identified by Gardner's (2006) model to promote stewardship within their institutions. Gardner (2006) conceptualized the five most invaluable thinking processes, referred to as the disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical mind, for professionals of today and in the future. In this study, the five minds were reported as examples of engagement in activities and effective communication with constituencies. Five institutional advancement vice presidents from five historically Black institutions located in states in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern regions of the United States participated in a telephone interview consisting of open-ended questions adapted from the "Journalism Interview Protocol" developed by Gardner, Csikszentmihalyi, and Damon (2001). The data gathered from the interview protocol provided details regarding participants' formative background and engagement in the institutional advancement function. Qualitative research procedures were used to analyze the data, generating 19 findings within the study. An analysis of the data produced 5 salient findings were identified based on reports of the five institutional advancement vice presidents: pursing additional training in the field of advancement; supporting staff within their offices; navigating institutional budgetary constraints to meet goals; engaging in reflection; and communicating core values and expectations to their staff and other institutional constituencies. Additionally, three conclusions emerged from the study: relational, leadership, and analytical capacities. Finally, the relational, leadership, analytical capacities established the foundation for the recommendations for practice and future research studies.
