Perceived Professional Development Needs of English-Speaking Evangelical Academic Deans in Africa and Asia

This study identified the perceived professional development needs of English-speaking evangelical theological school deans in Africa and Asia, as a basis for evaluating or creating professional development programs for these regions. It answered the question: What are the perceptions of the need for professional development prior to and after appointment to the deanship of English-speaking African and Asian evangelical theological school deans? A survey instrument was developed and sent to deans in ICETE-related evangelical theological schools in Africa and Asia. Their responses were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics to identify areas of responsibility and specific items of competence, which were perceived to be most in need of professional development prior to and after appointment to the deanship. For prior to appointment, the area of teaching responsibilities was considered necessary for both regions, as compared with accreditation matters for after appointment. Curriculum oversight was necessary for both prior to and after appointment for both regions. Specific items considered necessary prior to appointment for both regions were personal communication and motivation of people, as compared with evaluation of faculty/staff and accreditation processes for after appointment. Facilitate research and good teaching, plan and administer curriculum, lead teams, and resolve conflict were necessary for both prior to and after appointment for both regions. Further analysis identified differences between regions and also between newly appointed and experienced deans. These results suggested the need for some distinction in professional development between the two regions and types of deans.
