Direct Effects: A School-Based Intervention for Adolescents Exposed to Educator Sexual Misconduct

Educator sexual misconduct (ESM) against high school students is a significant problem throughout the United States (American Association of University Women, 2001; United States Department of Education [USDE], 2004), and has harmful effects on students and school systems. The maltreatment of a student by an educator undermines the cohesion of the entire school community. ESM can cause targeted victims psychological trauma (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2008), academic problems, and medical problems, and it can impede development (USDE, 2004). Non-targeted students who learn of their educator's misconduct may feel shocked or in disbelief (Shoop, 2004), and the systemic ignoring or disbelieving of targeted and non-targeted students can cause them to feel powerless (USDE, 2004). When a school does not prevent ESM and respond to ESM effectively, students' needs remain unmet, harmful situations can escalate, and there is increased legal liability against the school district (Yaffe, 1995). Currently, there are no mental health interventions for students, parents/guardians, and schools facing ESM (USDE, 2004). There is a dire need for a developmentally appropriate, school-based intervention for students, parents/guardians, and schools facing ESM. A systemic, school-based program that integrates developmentally sensitive interventions from the fields of cognitive, humanistic, art, drama, and narrative therapy is proposed to enhance adolescents' resilience and to prevent the onset or exacerbation of trauma symptoms or developmental problems that may result from ESM. The proposed program, DIRECT Effects, is an acronym for Developmentally-Informed, Resilience-Enhancing Crisis Treatment Effects.
