Corporate Universities: An Historical Perspective with an Analysis and Comparison of Development Models in the Literature and Practice

This dissertation examines the history of workforce education, corporate university development models in both literature and practice, and the evolution of the next generation of corporate universities. It traces workforce education from indentured servants in Europe during the Middle Ages, to the sophisticated corporate universities that flourished at the end of the twentieth century, while focusing on corporate university (CU) development models. A comparison of CU development models in the literature and practice confirmed the utility of the literature model in practice. It also summarizes the evolution of next-generation corporate universities that emerged at the beginning of the twenty-first century, as the result of global economic chaos, evolving technologies, and a talent crisis.
