Educational Preparation for the Role of the School Nurse: Perceptions of School Nurses in Washington State
Newell, Mary E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this quantitative research study was to identify the perceptions of currently practicing school nurses regarding their baccalaureate nursing education and determine if they felt adequately prepared to effectively practice in the role of a school nurse. A descriptive, quantitative on-line survey was conducted of Washington State school nurses to determine if their initial nursing education provided adequate education for this unique role. The specialty of school nursing has one scope of practice that includes a broad range of nursing practice skills and standards. There are 17 standards that serve as the theoretical framework for the scope of school nursing practice and professional performance. Respondents were asked to rate their perception of competency attainment at six months post-graduation. The findings from this study suggest that additional didactic and clinical components should be incorporated in baccalaureate nursing programs to better prepare graduates for school nursing in Washington State. Participants were able to identify areas of school nursing practice that could have been addressed in more depth within their baccalaureate program and during their orientation to the role and responsibilities of a school nurse. It is evident that the role of school nurse has become more complex and additional education is necessary in order for the school nurse to adhere to school nursing standards and competencies, and provide evidence-based practice to students within the school setting. This study's findings support the need for further research into the practice and professional performance of school nurses within Washington State and the nation.
