Mentoring and the Educational Persistence of At-Risk High School Students
McSheck, Jessica C.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study examined the experiences of 10 former proteges, six female and four male participants between the ages of 18 and 24, who were identified as at-risk and subsequently participated in the Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) in central Georgia for a minimum of two years. This study was designed to investigate proteges' beliefs and perceptions about the effectiveness of the YEP as an intervention for students at risk of dropping out of high school. A qualitative case study design was utilized, because it allowed the researcher to gain an in-depth understanding of the participants' experiences as proteges in the YEP. The researcher utilized surveys and semi-structured face-to-face interviews to collect data from participants. The themes that emerged from the data were enrichment opportunities and activities, encouraging environment, mentoring and tutoring, growth and maturity, and incentives. The findings of this study suggest that at-risk students are more likely to persist until graduation when they have access to academic and emotional support. Additionally, the findings of this study revealed that exposing at-risk youth to college and career opportunities may broaden their perception of what they can achieve and enhance their interest in attending college. The participants in this study indicated that the resources, interventions, and support provided by the YEP encouraged them to graduate from high school and pursue their academic and career goals.
