Executive Leadership: Preparation Is Paramount to Success
Miller, Tina Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
A review of current research clearly points to a shortage of highly qualified principal candidates to fill vacancies as "baby boomer" principals reach retirement age. In many school districts across the nation, the principal shortage is already being realized. Principal preparatory programs as well as school districts are working frantically to find and produce highly qualified candidates to fill the void left by retiring school executives. The primary purpose of this research study was to determine the specific skills and competencies needed by aspiring principals in a rural school district in southeastern North Carolina in order to demonstrate growth on the Strategic Leadership, Instructional Leadership, and Cultural Leadership standards on the North Carolina Standards for School Executives Evaluation instrument in preparation for the principalship. The goal of this research was to inform and design a professional development program which successfully transitions assistant principals into the role of principal within this school district.
