Evaluation of Family Impairment Following an Integrative Treatment Program for Children with Autism

Research has shown that behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are a consistent source of stress on the family unit. Given the increased amount of stress that families endure and the importance of the family unit to the child with ASD, treatment programs should not only take the child with ASD's needs into account, but also the needs and the health of the family. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that after the completion of a 12-month intensive in-home autism treatment program, the PUENTES program, family's perception of their functioning improves. The study proposes the following hypothesis: After participating in the PUENTES program, ASD children who have greater changes in learning rates, as measured by the Psychoeducational Profile-Revised (PEP-R) and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS), will also have higher family functioning, as measured by the Family Life Impairment Scale (FLIS), as perceived by their parents. Both archival data, consisting of children's scores on the VABS and PEP-R before and after the program, and newly collected data from the FLIS, collected over the phone from the parents of those children, consisted of the same 42 children and their families who had completed the PUENTES program. Correlations were conducted between the perceived level of family functioning on the FLIS and the change in learning rate scores PEP-R and VABS. Results showed that the FLIS was negatively correlated with the PEP-R at post-test (r = -0.34). This correlation indicated that higher scores on the PEP-R, i.e. as the child's functional skills improved, were associated with lower scores on the FLIS, i.e. better family functioning. There were no significant correlations between the FLIS and the four subscales of the VABS at post-test. Although not significant, a noteworthy finding was that the FLIS was correlated with the VABS communication subscale (r = -0.26). This trend indicated that greater improvement in the child's ability to communicate, were associated with lower scores on the FLIS. This research has a unique opportunity to highlight the importance of external support systems for families of children with ASD as well as how integrative programs such as the PUENTES program can contribute to increasing overall family functioning and family satisfaction.
