Components of US Associate Degree Nursing Programs and Their Relationship to the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses Graduate Pass Rates

The nursing shortage has accelerated the need for nursing programs to discover program components related to success on the NCLEX-RN. As the demand for nurses is growing, nursing programs have been called upon to help find solutions to the problem. This study attempted to contribute to the resolution of the shortage and provide nursing educators with recommendations that may be incorporated into their nursing programs to increase graduate pass rates on the NLCEX-RN. This study addressed one research question: How do graduate pass rates on the NCLEX-RN of associate degree nursing programs in the US with specific components compare to programs without the same components? The study used a quantitative inferential research methodology to examine the relationship between specific associate degree nursing program components and pass rates on the NCLEX-RN. The population of interest was directors of associate degree nursing programs in the US whose programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The total population of 617 directors was selected from the NLNAC database. Data was collected thru the use of a survey. The intent of the survey was to gather information on various components of associate degree nursing programs. The relationship between graduate pass rates on the NCLEX-RN and admission, progression, and exit criteria was analyzed to determine to what extent specific program components contributed to success on the NCLEX-RN. Two of seven components investigated in this study showed a positive relationship with graduate success on the NLCEX-RN. Significant variables was requiring students to complete remediation based on standardized exit examination scores prior to graduation and requiring students to complete a NCLEX review course prior to graduation. The components not found to be significant were completion of all cognate courses prior to admission to the nursing program, minimum incoming GPA of 2.5 for admission, remediation based on standardized college placement testing prior to admission, remediation based on standardized progressive examination scores prior to graduation, and completion of each nursing course with a minimum score of 74%. Additionally, nursing directors commented that student success can be attributed to faculty, tutoring, mentoring and remediation.
