Creating Standards for Student Organizations at Public Institutions in Colorado
Damania, Nicky Pessi
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
At institutions of higher education, the environment for developing student organizations has been less than optimum due to a lack of development of effective and efficient standards for these organizations. Even though there are tools for improving organizations, there are no set standards for their operation and governance to ignite leadership and influence change. This study provides the rationale for set standards to aid members, officers, and advisors in strengthening their student organizations. A mixed methods approach was used to conduct this research at public institutions in the state of Colorado. Three methods were used to gather data: an online survey, interviews, and focus group sessions. Questions for this study were constructed from established, nationally known standards (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and Assessing and Improving Student Organizations). When all data was collected, common themes emerged with various subthemes. Those themes were used to yield seven practical standards for student organizations.
