Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): A Primer for University and College Board Members. An AGB White Paper
Voss, Brian D.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges
The environment in which MOOCs and other forms of online education operate is changing virtually every day. Based upon a presentation given to the board of directors of AGB, this white paper is an effort to give board chairs, presidents, and others some context to help guide discussions on their own campuses. It provides a primer on MOOCs, describes how MOOCs work, and assesses what remains to be seen, issues to consider, key challenges, and issues for boards. The following additional articles are also included: (1) What Campus Leaders Need to Know about MOOCs. An EDUCAUSE Executive Briefing (EDUCAUSE); (2) Is This Time Different? Questions for MOOCs and Online Learning Beyond 2012 (Committee on Institutional Cooperation, Chief Information Officers, August 2012); and (3) MOOCs: Get in the Game. Viewpoints ("EDUCAUSE REVIEW" p58-59 Jan-Feb 2013). Two appendices present: (1) The Online Learning Landscape; and (2) Key Online Terms and Concepts. A bibliography is included.
