Leadership and Ethics: A Pragmatic Exploration among Candidates in a Doctoral Leadership Program

The study of leadership and ethics, in the context of ethical behavior, is an area of concern, yet interest in an ever changing multicultural society of social norms and values. The magnitude of success has been and can be attributed to thriving and flourishing leadership exhibited by those parties involved. However, the behaviors exhibited by those who lead can be seen as an example of unethical conduct and performance as viewed by other lens of perception. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between leadership and ethics. Situational and environmental factors cause leaders to behave in a manner-based on the situational context (Lord, Brown, & Freiberg, 1999). Through the use of two data instruments, the Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI) and the Ethical Leadership Scale (ELS), a pragmatic exploration of leadership and ethics among candidates in a doctoral leadership program, in reference to ethical behavior, is prepared. A Spearman's rho correlational analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the independent variables, the dependent variables, and the demographics. The researcher sought to investigate if a relationship existed between a leader's behaviors and ethics. The results of the correlation indicated that there are significant relationships between leadership and ethics as measured by the LPI and the ELS in the following categories: gender for females, 50-59 years of age, and four dimensions (Model the Way, Inspire a vision, Enable others to act, and Encourage the heart) of the LPI in a correlate to the ELS. Daniels (2009) notes there is a small element of literature on ethics that discusses leadership in the context of moral decision-making and there is little testing of ethical leadership as a construct (Brown, Trevino, & Harrison, 2005). Research suggests that ethical leadership remains largely unexplored offering researchers opportunities for new discoveries and leaders opportunities to improve their effectiveness.
