Exploring Communities of Practice: The Study of Teachers' Collective Inquiry of Students' Mathematical Work
Paige, Laura Marie
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The University of Wisconsin - Madison
This study examines a group of four teachers engaged in a professional development focused on understanding students' mathematical thinking. Using activity theory as a theoretical framework it sought to determine what pedagogical tools associated with a reform mathematics curriculum (i.e. Cognitively Guided Instruction) teachers appropriated while "looking at student work" in a community of practice. Second, the study sought to determine what mediating factors influenced what the teachers appropriated in the community of practice. Lastly, it determined what new practices teachers transferred into their mathematics instruction as a result of the "looking at student work" focused on students' mathematical understanding. The implications of a professional development derived from the study's findings and discussions were proposed, as well as a recommendation for further exploration on professional development focused on "looking at student work."
