Impact of Training Method on the Behavior of Physicians towards the Use of Computerized Provider Order Entry Systems

The use of workflow or simulated training has been used in the training of medical students for several decades. As technology emerged, training using simulation has grown as an effective way of enhancing training outcomes and increasing the clinical effectiveness of medical students. As a result of a heightened focus on the integration of Information Technology in the delivery of healthcare, challenges have been identified in achieving widespread adoption of Information Systems in the care of patients. Successful medical student training techniques, principally simulation training, create a model that information system training programs should emulate in order to drive adoption of Health Information Technology. Better clinical outcomes, including national quality core measures, have been correlated to the increased use of information systems supporting the delivery of clinical care. Modeling an information systems training program after medical training programs that yield superior learning outcomes and clinical judgment improved information systems training efficacy, training satisfaction, and the overall adoption of Health Information Technology.
