Parent Attitudes towards Home Preparation for Standardized Testing in Jamaica
Harrisingh, Allison E.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This phenomenological qualitative study explored the lived experiences of parents who used stress-reducing interventions with children during home preparation for the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) in Kingston, Jamaica. Eight Grade Six parents with children who participated in the 2010 GSAT were interviewed. Only parents with a Grade Six child who exhibited test anxiety symptoms were included in the sample. Four themes emerged from the interviews conducted with parents. Themes represented the emotions, attitudes, and patterns that surfaced throughout test preparation in the home. Findings indicated that the home preparation process was time consuming and frustrating but, allowed for parent child bonding as a result of time spent together. Themes that emerged included commitment, sacrifice, parent child bonding, and anxiety. Parents gained an increased appreciation for the role that teachers played in preparing students for the GSAT, and the importance of spending time with children. Through an exploration of the lived experience of parents throughout GSAT home preparation, it is hoped that educational leaders and stakeholders will take the necessary steps to assist with the management of test anxiety symptoms in children. Future research will play an important role in determining what methods will best assist parents in managing test anxiety symptoms when preparing Grade Six children for the GSAT.
