Impact of a Web-Based Reading Program on Sixth-Grade English Language Learners
Wright, Rosena
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University
This applied dissertation was developed to determine (a) the impact that Achieve3000, a web-based reading program, had on the reading-comprehension skills of English language learners (ELLs) and (b) the perceptions of students and their teacher on the technology program used at the study school as it relates to the remediation of the reading deficiencies of the ELL students. The problem addressed was the need to increase the reading proficiency of ELL students who read at least 2 grade levels below grade. The participating students received reading instruction using the Achieve3000 web-based reading program for 12 consecutive weeks. A nonexperimental, single-group design with a pre- and posttest was used to collect quantitative data. A repeated-measures "t" test comparing pre- and posttest results was used to determine any significant improvement in reading test scores. A 1-tailed test was used because the effect of the Achieve3000 reading program on the reading-comprehension skills of the ELL was assumed to be positive. An analysis of the results revealed the 9 ELL students and their English as a second language teacher had positive perceptions of Achieve3000. Mean reading-comprehension scores showed statistically significant improvement, although only 5 of the 9 students showed increased achievement. Further research is recommended to provide convincing evidence of the effects of Achieve3000 on student reading achievement at the middle school level.
