This bulletin has been prepared to help teachers, supervisors, students of education, and others gain information and understanding about current practices and developing trends in the social studies programs of elementary schools throughout the Nation. Emphasis is given to ways in which social studies adjusts to the challenges of living in an age of aerospace proportions. A major objective of the publication is to help readers discover ways in which schools are developing various aspects of the social studies, as a means of improving or moving forward their own programs. The information concerning social studies programs has been gained: (1) from close contact with many State and local school systems, professional organizations, and colleges and universities; and (2) from significant publications in the field, especially books, bulletins, journals, and social studies curriculum guides. Following a Foreword, the following chapters are included: (1) Improving social studies; (2) The social studies program; (3) Kinds of learning experiences; (4) Content in the social studies; (5) Methods of instruction; (6) Evaluation of outcomes; (7) Materials and resources; and (8) The teacher of social studies.
