Student Loan Default Literature Review
McMillion, Robin
TG (Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation)
Whereas many prior studies evaluated the association between borrower or institutional characteristics and default behavior, the general finding of most researchers today is that college success plays a bigger role in predicting who will default than either the background of the borrower or the type of institution attended. All else being equal, students who are successful in their studies tend to have lower default rates than those who are not. This is a hopeful finding in that loan repayment appears to hinge on factors that are at least partially under the control of the borrower, the school, or both. This literature review will cover research into the variety of factors which may play a role in defaults. A bibliography is included.
