McWaine, Wendell Lamar, II
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between registration status and the persistence, end-of-semester GPA, and course success for African American males in a suburban community college system. This study also sought to determine if there was a difference between the persistence, end-of-semester GPA, and course success of African American males who registered for their classes on time versus those African American males who registered late for their classes. The sample included all African American males who registered for classes during the Fall and Spring semesters of 2007, 2008, and 2009. A total of 5,389 African American males registered for classes during this timeframe and there were 422 instances of African American males registering late during these six semesters. The findings indicated that there was no significant relationship between registration status and persistence. There was a significant relationship found between registration status and both end-of-semester GPA and course success. The findings showed that there was no significant difference between the persistence of African American males who registered on time versus African American males who registered late. There was a significant difference found regarding end-of-semester GPA and course success for African American males who registered on time versus African American males who registered late.
