Western Undergraduate Exchange: Enrollment Report, Fall 2010
Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a regional tuition-reciprocity agreement that enables students from WICHE states to enroll in participating two- and four-year public institutions at 150 percent of the enrolling institution's resident tuition. WUE has been operating for almost 25 years and is the largest program of its kind in the nation. Since 1999, WUE has provided WICHE students and their parents discounts on more than 236,600 annual tuition bills--a benefit of a remarkable $1.4 billion dollars in estimated tuition savings. And since the WUE program began in 1988, WICHE state residents have saved on more than 300,100 annual tuition bills. The program continues to grow: in 2010-11 some 26,700 WUE students saved $210.8 million dollars in tuition costs. This year, WUE students saved an average of $7,891. A graph included in this report shows the continued growth of the program in enrollment and savings over the last five years. Students can choose from 145 participating WUE institutions. California State University's Monterey Bay is WUE's newest member, and will begin enrolling students through WUE in fall 2011. This fall's WUE headcount demonstrates that WUE students know where the current and future job opportunities are. Their "Top Ten" majors are directly aligned with some of the West's most crucial workforce needs. They are: (1) healthcare; (2) the biological and biomedical sciences; (3) engineering; (4) business; (5) education; (6) the social sciences; (7) visual and performing arts; (8) psychology; (9) parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies; and (10) communication and journalism. (Contains 5 tables and 2 charts.) [For the Fall 2009 edition of this report, see ED508994.]
