National Testing of Pupils in Europe: Objectives, Organisation and Use of Results. Italy 2009
Ricci, Roberto
The evaluation at Italian Primary and Lower Secondary school levels in Italy is mainly defined by the continuous assessment performed by teachers. It is based on both the oral and written pupils' outputs, on the fulfilment of school projects and on the assignment and carrying out of homeworks. It may be both a formative assessment and/or a summative assessment. The introduction of national testing is recent and the implementation process of the national evaluation system (SNV) is still unfinished. Experimentally, SNV got off during the 2001/02 school year, involving--on a voluntary basis--the fifth year of primary schools, the first year of lower secondary schools and the third year of upper secondary schools. This paper discusses the objectives, organization, and use of results of the national testing of pupils in Italy. This paper contains the following parts: (1) General Overview of Pupil Assessment; (2) Historical Background to National Testing and its Political Framework; (3) Aims and Organizations of National Testing; and (4) Impact of National Testing.
