Arts and Cultural Education at School in Europe. Slovakia 2007/08
Ivanova, Marta; Aichova, Gabriela
The decisions related to the national curriculum are made at central level. The curriculum development is under responsibility of the National Institute for Education (organisation directly managed by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic). "Zakladna skola" provides teaching of compulsory subjects, included separate compulsory art subjects: (1) visual arts; and (2) music. The separate compulsory art subjects have the following general aims: (1) visual arts: development of aesthetic feelings and development of creativity; and (2) music: acquisition of the bases of musical literacy, development of musicality, emotional intelligence and creative thinking of pupils. Cultural education is also included within the study of the national language, history and ethics. For instance, drama and/or performance of verbal skills are taught in the language subjects. The curriculum also includes the activities such as the visits of museums, concerts, art galleries and similar facilities. This paper contains the following sections: (1) Responsibility and purpose; (2) Organisation and aims of arts education; (3) Special provision with a focus on art education; (4) Assessment of pupils' progress and monitoring of standards in the arts; (5) Teacher education in the arts; (6) Initiatives; and (7) Ongoing reforms and proposals.
