The Impact of a Transition Plan on Reading Test Scores
Farver, Christy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Walden University
The National Assessment of Title I, Final Report reported discrepancies in sustaining gains in the reading achievement of 4th grade students who have received Title I intervention services and sustaining those gains when students return to general education classroom. This study was based on a differentiated theory that includes instructional reading strategies intended to foster a transfer of learning in an inclusive classroom. Participants included 36, 4th grade students who had been identified for Title I targeted assistance in four classes in two elementary schools. The study was a pretest/posttest control group design that measured the dependent variables, reading levels from the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) after implementation of a transition plan with the experimental group over an 8 week period. Analysis of covariance was employed to examine differences in posttest scores while controlling for pretest scores. There were no statistically significant differences in reading levels post intervention between the two groups. The intervention services need to be studied further with a larger sample size of students to investigate if the reading interventions programs are effective. The implications for social change from this research include knowledge that is useful for improving educator and student experiences to transfer reading skills from the intervention setting to the general education setting.
