Linguistic Factors Associated with Self-Inflicted Injury in Borderline Personality Disorder
Birdwell, Benjamin Park
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Psychology
The present study builds on previous research, which demonstrated higher levels of depressive and interpersonal conflict language in first-person narrative accounts of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempt (SA) in borderline personality disorder. The present study was designed to examine the semantic similarity of time-sequences within narratives and widely accepted measures of depression and interpersonal conflict using Latent Semantic Analysis. Depressive criteria and interpersonal conflict factors were drawn from each measure and individually applied to linguistic analysis to determine whether certain items were differentially influential in producing the effects found in the first phase of analyses. Finally, working from previous research that demonstrated differences between ambivalent and nonambivalent suicide attempts (Birdwell, Atkins, Welch, & Linehan, 2008), narratives were classified on this basis and considered separately. Results indicated that no significant fluctuations in either linguistic construct occurred in hypothesized directions for either the combined group or for subgroups divided on the basis of ambivalence. None of the depressive criteria sets or interpersonal conflict factors was found to exert relatively greater or lesser influence on linguistic analyses.
