Taking Action: An Educator's Guide to Involving Students in Environmental Projects
Council for Environmental Education
Developed in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund, "Taking Action" inspires ideas and provides models for conducting effective environmental projects--projects that dynamically engage students from start to finish. From adopting species to protecting habitats to saving energy and creating publications, this guide will help educators plan, implement, and evaluate environmental action projects. Samples of more than 30 projects from around the country provide a glimpse of how groups of students have seen a need in their community and successfully worked together to implement change. The table of contents divides the book into five sections. Section I-- An Overview of Action, presents information on the whats, whys and hows of action projects, along with tips for resolving conflicts. Section II-- The Rationale for Action, describes some of the many educational, personal, and general benefits that action projects can provide learners of all ages. Section III-- How to Add Action to Your Teaching, summarizes the specifics of planning, implementing, and evaluating effective environmental action projects. Section IV-- Action Success Stories, analyzes more than 30 actual projects from around the country. Following each group of success stories is a list of ideas for similar projects and additional resources. Section V--For More Information, lists national student organizations, telecommunications networks, fund-raising programs, and other resources to help you incorporate environmental action into your teaching.
