Descriptive Study of Activities Identified by Principals as Parental Involvement Activities through Survey Research
Anderson, Melinda
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Stephen F. Austin State University
This study was designed to identify parental involvement activities used by successful schools. Participating schools were identified as successful by an Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) rating of recognized or exemplary. Using survey methods, data was collected from the principals of the schools about parental involvement activities on their campuses. To further narrow the study, only schools with at least a 50 percent socioeconomically disadvantaged population met the criteria to be included. The data was classified and coded by descriptors to identify academic activities. The data was analyzed to determine how parents were informed of the activities. The activities listed as parental involvement activities were compiled into a comprehensive list. Based on the data analysis, it was determined that parents are involved in both academic and nonacademic activities. As well, parents respond to a variety of informative practices and parental involvement activities are specific to individual campus needs. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Literacy is a priority among the schools across the state, which participated in the study. All of the principals reported having at least one night dedicated to literacy. (2) Principals believed it was important to have an incentive for the parents to come to the parental involvement activities. (3) Keeping parents informed of events is essential in keeping them involved with students' education. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
