Student Perceptions of Facebook, an Online Social Networking Site at a Non-Residential, Community Branch College in Northeastern Pennsylvania: A Phenomenological Study
Friday, Brenda E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Marywood University
Research indicates that students residing at four-year institutions have been using online social networking sites such as Facebook as a means of efficient communication with one another. The technological advancements of social networking have also been identified as a means of creating community and belonging that may improve overall student engagement. This study examined student perceptions of Facebook among students attending a non-residential, community branch college in Northeastern Pennsylvania as a means of communication and socialization. The results indicate that, although respondents found Facebook a viable means of socialization, they see little academic value in its use. They also expressed concerns about privacy and the misuse of Facebook and possible negative impact on future plans.
