Sit Down! You're Rocking the Boat!: Asian Americans, Racial Manipulation, and the Discourse of the Denial of Success
Gonzalez, Anna K.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Claremont Graduate University
This dissertation seeks to rearticulate racial formations in the United States and expand the discourse on race in higher education by placing Asian Americans at the center of the discussion. Through the use of genealogy and discourse analysis, this research presents a broader description of the Asian American racial experience in higher education by addressing what is included and exempted from the grand narrative of race in higher education and in so doing, expands the racialized context of higher education. It examines how the definitions of "minority" affect educational practices and policies with particular attention to claims of "victimization" and "success." Finally, it introduces two terms, "racial manipulation"--the act of placing Asian Americans in the category of either white or people of color depending on the particular situation--and "discourse of the denial of success"--the insistence to highlight the academic and socioeconomic failures rather than successes of Asian Americans--to encapsulate the experiences of Asian Americans in higher education in relation to minorities and non-minorities alike.
