Using Structural Analysis in Head Start Classrooms: Antecedent-Based Interventions for Young Children at Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
Park, Kristy Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Louisville
The majority of FBA research has focused on identifying and developing interventions based on the function or consequences of problem behavior; however, increased attention has recently been focused on the effects of antecedent variables on problem behavior in natural settings. This study examined the functional antecedent-based process in early childhood with four preschool-aged students at risk for Behavioral Disorders. The antecedent-based process included four phases: (1) assessment gathering through structured interviews and direct observations to develop a hypothesis statement regarding conditions in which problem behavior is least or most likely to occur, (2) hypothesis testing through the use of a structural analysis to validate conditions, (3) antecedent-based interventions based on verified hypotheses, and (4) teacher acceptability questionnaire regarding the FBA process. Results from the withdrawal design study demonstrated that a functional relationship exists between implementation of the antecedent-based interventions and decreases in disruptive behaviors and increases in on task and academic responding. Study results supported the value of antecedent-based assessment and intervention strategies as effective procedures for improving behavior outcomes for young children. Implications, study limitations, and future research directions are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
