Democratic Values Supporting the Core Identity of Liberal Higher Education
Latimer, Robin Marcelle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of American democratic values and to identify participant perceptions of the core identity of American higher education. Kezzar (2005) proposed that projects for democratic dialogue are a neoliberal response to the failures of necoconservative and Old Left policies. These projects may be part of resurgent interest in democratic practices as noted by Starratt (2003). Participants were asked to respond to an online survey addressing democratic beliefs and issues surrounding the core identity of higher education. One-hundred and thirty-nine individuals (88% white female) participated. Findings suggested that membership in organizations that support higher education, e.g., American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), impacted participant ratings of values placed upon democratic participation. Participants aged 56 or older strongly supported values for democratic participation and for a more traditional paradigm of higher education.
