The Exceptional Art of Hank Mobley's 1955-1970 Jazz Compositions
Clark, Russell M.
ProQuest LLC, D.M.A. Dissertation, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Hank Mobley had profound influence on the East coast style of jazz. As a composer, he was a major contributor to the development of the specific style of East Coast jazz known as hard bop. Between the years of 1955 and 1970, Hank Mobley recorded one hundred-forty two original compositions. Due to the lack of published transcriptions and analyses of Mobley's work, this dissertation examines Mobley's compositional language across the breadth of his career. This dissertation divides Mobley's career into four distinct periods to provide greater focus on his compositional craft. His recording activities, musical associations, and absences from the New York Jazz scene create the divisions that define these periods. Period I: 1955-1959 Jazz Compositions. Period II: 1960-1963 Jazz Compositions. Period III: 1963-1965 Jazz Compositions. Period IV: 1966-1970 Jazz Compositions. This dissertation provides a brief biography of Mobley, and analyzes a selection of his compositions according to their organization, harmonic progressions, and melodic techniques.
