High School Teachers and High School Reform: A Phenomenological Study of the Influence of Teachers' High School Experience regarding Their High School Teaching Experience
Augustine, Dwaine Keith
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This study explored the effects of the lived high school experiences of high school teachers and how those experiences may inform researchers regarding high school reform. One aim was to investigate how teachers' experiences during high school influenced their thoughts or behaviors toward high school as a rite of passage, epiphany, or critical moment/incident. A second aim was to explore whether high school experiences influenced teachers' educational practice. A narrative inquiry was employed using a blended method of analysis. Data were collected through interviews. The researcher concluded that teachers' experiences as high school students played an encompassing role in their lives through rites of passage, epiphanies, and critical moments, and that teachers' experiences as a high school student influenced their educational practice. Education reformers should seek to make changes that will incorporate the important role high school plays in teachers' lives.
