The Influence of Fees on Supervision of Licensed Professional Counselor Interns in Texas: A Mixed-Methods Study

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of payment status on perceptions of Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Interns regarding aspects of the supervisory relationship. Method. Survey responses from 230 LPC Interns in Texas were collected using SurveyMonkey[TM] (2009) to examine how supervision fees influence: (a) supervisor selection, (b) the supervisory relationship, (c) supervisee contribution, (d) supervisee satisfaction, and (e) supervisee willingness to terminate an unsatisfying supervisory relationship. Responses were analyzed using both quantitative (i.e., chi-square statistics) and qualitative analyses (i.e., classical content analysis). Results. Supervision fees were a factor in the consideration and selection of a supervisor. The cost of supervision was second only to a sense of connection or personality fit in the participants' choices of supervisors. Over half of the participants (56.6%) reported that they paid a fee for their LPC supervision. Many participants (43.9%) who paid for their supervision did not consider the fee to be a factor in their relationships with their supervisors, although some participants (24%) did report having higher expectations as a result of paying for supervision. No statistically significant differences were present between payment groups (i.e., LPC Interns who pay for supervision and LPC Interns who receive free supervision) with regard to supervisee contribution, satisfaction, and willingness to terminate an unsatisfying supervisory relationship. Over 85% of the participants in this study reported being Very Satisfied or Satisfied with their supervision. Over half (58.7%) of the participants indicated that they were only "Somewhat likely" or "Not likely" to terminate a supervisory relationship that was not working.
