Effect of Interactive Whiteboard Instruction on 5th Grade Standardized Test Scores in the Area of Mathematics

This study was an investigation of the effectiveness of mathematics instruction using the interactive whiteboard (IWB) for 1, 2, and 3 years. Guided by Gagne's conditions of learning theory, this program evaluation study investigated the impact of receiving 1, 2, or 3 years of mathematics instruction using the IWB on mathematics scores on the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) among 5th graders. Many investigators have documented positive learning effects of the IWB in the classroom but have not been able to show an increase in standardized test scores. Participants included all 5th grade students who had attended the studied school for grades 3, 4, and 5. ANOVA was used to analyze the data; the independent variable was defined as 1, 2, or 3 years of mathematics instruction with the IWB, and the dependent variable was defined as mathematics CRCT score. It was shown that 3 years of mathematics instruction with the IWB significantly improved test scores in the areas of geometry and algebra. This study also investigated the relationship between the independent variable of the mathematics teachers' level of comfort using technology in these classes, using the Level of Technology Implementation questionnaire and the dependent variable of the students' overall mathematics standardized test scores in mathematics. Results of the ANOVA showed no relationship. Implications for social change include providing pathways for substantiating importance of investment in technology that can result in improved standardized mathematics test scores in mathematics.
