The Heart of Student Success: Teaching, Learning, and College Completion. 2010 Findings. Executive Summary
Center for Community College Student Engagement
This paper describes four key strategies to promote the strengthened classroom experiences that ultimately are requisite to both increased levels of college completion and deeper levels of learning. In this report, the term "classroom experiences" refers to any activity that takes place as part of a regularly scheduled course. The key strategies are: (1) Strengthen classroom engagement; (2) Integrate student support into learning experiences; (3) Expand professional development focused on engaging students; and (4) Focus institutional policies on creating the conditions for learning. The Center for Community College Student Engagement uses data from its three surveys--the Community College Survey of Student Engagement ("CCSSE"), the Survey of Entering Student Engagement ("SENSE"), and the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement ("CCFSSE")--to explore the challenges associated with college completion and how these strategies address them. "CCSSE" data reported here include only respondents who indicate that they do not currently hold a college degree. "SENSE" data reported here include only entering students who indicate that they do not currently hold a college degree. Entering students are those who indicate that this is their first time at their college. (Contains 7 endnotes.)
