Teacher Survey of the Relationship between Student Self-Regulation and Achievement among Students with and without Disabilities in an Urban Setting

General and special education teachers and paraprofessionals from several New York City schools completed three survey instruments that investigated relationships between the background characteristics of teachers, their instructional practices, student levels of engagement and self-regulation, and teacher-reported achievement levels of students. The results indicated that teacher reports of students' levels of self-regulation were the most robust achievement predictors explaining between 13.7 and 20.2 percent of the variance in those indicators. The other significant predictors explaining between 4.1 and 7.7 percent of that variance were years teaching, grade levels taught, and instruction of applied and basic skills. Although student engagement was not a significant predictor of achievement, it predicted more than 34 percent of the variance in self-regulation which in turn explained 36 percent of the variance in engagement. Student directedness and use of unmodified curricula were also significant predictors of self-regulation which in turn was a significant predictor of those practices. Again substantially more variance in instruction was explained by self-regulation than instruction explained of the variance in self-regulation.
