Synchronicity and Transformation in the Experience of Prison Educators

Many inmates arrive in prison with weak educational backgrounds and social skills as well as psychological problems and drug and alcohol addiction. The focus of this phenomenological study was to identify roles of prison educators in helping inmate students overcome their challenges through transformative experiences that motivate the students to change their criminal mind set. Jung's synchronicity theory, Mezirow's transformative learning theory, and Maslow's self-actualization theory served as the conceptual frameworks for this study. The understanding and observations of 13 prison educators working in prisons in the northeastern United States were elicited through in-depth interviews. The data analysis involved open and axial coding of 7 emergent themes, including roles of model and counselor; strategies of humor and encouragement; and characteristics of love, value, respect, and service. Educators believed they play a role in the transformative experiences of their inmate students. While few prison educators understood the concept of synchronicity, most experienced similar teachable moments that they perceived facilitated transformation. By interacting with and observing their prison educators, inmate students were perceived to be able to develop social skills and construct new value systems. The inmate students may utilize these new skills in their family settings and in the roles they perform in their communities to dissuade others from choosing a life of crime, especially the youth. An implication for prison systems is the importance of hiring and supporting prison educators who may possess some qualities of self-actualized persons and who might capitalize on every opportunity to facilitate inmates' transformation into productive, reformed citizens.
