Paving a Pathway for Latinas to Access College or a Post-Secondary Education
Cruz Herrera, Sandra Luz
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California Lutheran University
The extensive research on Latinas in education has historically focused on the many challenges and barriers that impede them from accessing a high-quality education that will ultimately open the doors to a college education or post-secondary options and opportunities. Barriers that have been attributed to impeding Latinas from succeeding are identified within four major components including: intrapersonal and interpersonal characteristics, family and cultural norms; secondary schooling; and, accessing college challenges. The purpose of this study is to examine these barriers and explore them through the lens of the experiences of professional Latinas. Their stories will enlighten and guide us to understand how they were able to overcome these barriers, and succeed in spite of them. Ultimately, these findings can provide educational institutions information to develop programs to support Latinas in the areas of academics and the development of social capital while validating their culture and traditions.
