The Effects of Participation in Marching Band on Academic Achievement
Vitucci, Mary Elizabeth
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene College
As schools face tough decisions regarding budget cuts and program elimination, research regarding the importance of extracurricular activities is increasingly important. This study focused on the impact of involvement in band on student achievement as defined by GPA and attendance. Because students were only involved in band extracurricularly during the fall semester, the researcher was able to examine the impact of involvement versus non-involvement. These results were compared to a random sample of 55 other high school students to account for school-wide trends. The researcher also examined differences between achievement and grade level as well as achievement and gender. The researcher found no significant differences in academic achievement between band and non-band members, between grade levels, or between genders.
